June 25, 2005 -- On Thursday, UTEP police say a man made his way inside one of these apartments, but he was not invited. This is one of two incidents that have have UTEP police on guard.

Meagen Voss- UTEP student, "They worry me a little but I feel safe the campus police force is pretty prevalent."

UTEP student, Meagen Voss lives on campus and says it's hard to believe one of the two assaults that have happened in the last two weeks allegedly took place right in front of her apartment complex. UTEP police say on July 12 at about 5:30 in the morning a man attempted to sexually assault a UTEP student in front of Miner Village.

Lt. Micheal Hanna- Operations Commander for UTEP Police, "We understand she was outside the apartment complex waiting for a taxi cab to take her to the airport."

The most recent assault happened about a half a mile from Miner Village at the El Dorado Apartments on Sunbowl Dr. In this case a women reported a man walked into her apartment. In both incidents the man was scared away. Tonight, UTEP police believe the two cases are connected.

Hanna, "From what we understand yes based on comparisons that's what are detectives believe and that's what prompted a crime alert."

UTEP administrators issued the crime alert by emailing all students. Although UTEP police consider these incidents attempted sexual assaults, the El Paso Police Department tell us one was an assault and the other a burglary. Nonetheless, UTEP police are taking extra precautions and making people aware.

Jose Saba- UTEP student, "I think it's okay because students are now aware."

The man is described as an African-American in his 20's, approximately 6 feet tall and 170 pounds. He's possibly wearing wire rimmed glasses and his hair style is described as balding or cut very short.

UTEP police also want students to know you can get an escort to your car from anywhere in campus. Just call UTEP police at 747-5611.
